EUROVIA CS breaking onto Baltic market, modernising railways in Lithuania

Praha, 18 May 2012 – The construction company EUROVIA CS is modernising railways in Lithuania, having won a selection procedure along with the company ELT for track optimisation in the segment Palemonas – Gaižiunai. The overall value is nearly CZK 553 million and the project's investor is Lithuanian Railways (Lietuvos geležinkeliai).
EUROVIA CS will lead the consortium in reconstructing 24.6 kilometres of single-track railway as part of the extensive "Rail Baltica" project. The expected date of completion for the finished work is the end of June 2014. "The contract in Lithuania is one of the most important events of the year for us, particularly in the current situation where very few contracts for construction of transportation infrastructure are being tendered in the Czech Republic. At the same time I trust that we will make a good reputation for ourselves in the region, opening the door to further interesting projects," said Martin Borovka, EUROVIA CS's chairman of the board and CEO.
The essence of the contract is to modernise the railway superstructure and subgrade while also rebuilding the bridges and crossings. Switches and modern signalling devices will be complemented with new drainage and culverts. Czech workers will lay 1.25 kilometres of completely new track at the Gaižiúnai railway station. Passengers can look forward to new platforms at all stations on the route.
The company will begin work on the project immediately following the end of negotiations with subcontractors and necessary planning work.
The goal of the "Rail Baltica" track is to connect Finland, the Baltics and Poland, to integrate the Baltic countries into the European railway system with the standard "European" gauge and to help support the movement of transportation channels from road to railway. The project also includes the construction of 950 km of completely new railway track from Warsaw to Tallinn via Kaunus, Lithuania and Riga, Latvia. Tallinn would then be connected to Helsinki by an undersea tunnel.
